KC-97 Tanker History:

The KC-97 Stratotanker is a strategic tanker manufactured by Boeing.  It is an aerial refueling tanker variant of the C-97 Stratofreighter.  The KC-97 Stratotanker became the backbone of the United States Air Force's tanker fleet until it was replaced by the KC-135.   

In the 1950's, the USAF began operating the KC-97.  The KC-97 incorporates piston engines whixh was fueled by aviation gasoline, but on a refueling mission, it carried jet fuel.  The KC-97, despite being an effective tanker, its low speed and low operational altitude complicated refueling operations with jet aircraft.  The KC-97 was phased out by the Strategic Air Command.  The Tactical Air Command, Air Force Reserves and the Air National Guard units continued operating the KC-97 and in 1978, it was finally retired.
