History of the B-29
Superfortress
Primarily flown in World War II
and the Korean War, the B-29
Superfortress was introduced on
May 8, 1944. Built by Boeing, the B-
29 first flew on September 21, 1942.
There were more than 3,000 B-29s
built. It carried the atomic bombs
which wrecked Hiroshima and
Nagasaki. The aircraft was capable
od carrying 11 crew members. It
was also used by the Stratovision
Company as flying television
transmitters after the war. Powered
by four Wright R-3350-23 and 23A
turbo supercharged radial engines,
it can had a maximum speed of 357
mph. It was 30.18m in length and
8.5m in height. Its wingspan was
43.06m. Each cost more than
$600,000 then.
The B-29's name was derived
from theB-17 Flying Fortress. It
became obsolete when jet engine
fighter planes were being
developed. It was one of the largest
aircraft to serve in World War II. Many
bombers, reconnaissance aircraft,
trainers and tankers were designed
based on the Superfortress.
