B-52 Stratofortress History:

The Boeing B-52 Stratofortress is a long-range strategic bomber flown by the United States Air Force since 1954, replacing the Convair B-36 and the Boeing B-47. Although built for the role of Cold War-era nuclear deterrent, its conventional capabilities are these days the more important role in USAF operations, where its long range, heavy weapons load and fearsome reputation are indispensable. The B-52 is the most famous combat aircraft in the U.S. Air Force.

The B-52A was the first production variant and were only used for testing.  B-52B was the first operational version developed in parallel prototypes since 1951.  The B-52's maiden flight was on April 15, 1952, piloted by Tex Johnston.  The B-52 Stratofortress has been a veteran of several wars including the Vietnam War, Cold War, Gulfwar and others but has dropped only conventional munitions in actual combat.  The B-52's superior performance and low operating costs have kept other aircraft from replacing it.  In January 2005, the B-52 became the second aircraft to mark 50 years of continuous service with its original primary operator.  The USAF intends to keep the B-52 in service until 2040 and was periodically refurbished at the USAF maintenance depots.
