C-119 Gunship History:

The first AC-119G Shadow operational sortie was flown on 5 January 1969 and from that time until 8 March 1969, the aircraft was in a combat evaluation phase.

The AC-119 Gunship is a fixed-wing gunship manufactured by Fairchild. It was introduced commercially in November of 1968. The aircraft was developed during the war in Vietnam and came after the AC-130. Its primary users were the United States Air Force and South Vietnam Air Force. The aircraft retired with USAF in 1971 and in 1975 with RVNAF.

In 1967, the idea of a fixed-gunship became successful which is why the USAF was having difficulties keeping up with the demand. As a result, the AC-130s were created under the Project Gunship II but they were mostly used by the Ho Chi Minh trail for interdiction.

In 1968, 26 C-119G aircrafts were converted to AC-119G under Project Gunship III. The AC-119G was nicknamed the "Shadow". The Fairchild-Hiller was contracted for all the conversions. They also converted 26 C-119Ks into AC-119Ks which are called "Stingers".

The AC-119G Shadow followed the AC-47 aircraft. The AC-47 aircraft is also known as the "Spooky". The AC-119G is said to be "dressed well". It was designed and built for TIC support. It allows six (6) flight crews during day time while eight (8) during night time. The crew members include the pilot, co-pilot, navigator, night observation sight (NOS) operator, illuminator operator, flight engineer, and two gunners. The aircraft is 26.36 meter long; it has a wingspan of 33.31 meter; height of 8.12 meter; wing area of 130 square meters; weight of 18,200 kilograms when empty, and a maximum takeoff weight of 28,100 kilograms. It is powered by 2x Wright R-3350-85 "Duplex Cyclone" radial engines with 3,500-horsepower each.
