History of the C-130
Hercules Grey
The Hercules C130 military
transport aircraft was designed and
manufactured by Lockheed which
was introduced in December 1957.
It first flew on August 23, 1954. It is
able to use unprepared runways for
takeoffs and landings. Due to its
versatile airframe, a variety of roles
have been assigned to the Hercules
C130. It is used for search and
rescue, scientific research support,
weather reconnaissance, aerial
fueling, aerial firefighting, maritime
patrol, and airborne assault. It is
primarily used by The US Air Force,
US Marine Corps, and Royal Air
Force.
The Hercules C130 has
wingspan of 40.4m, length of 29.8m
and height of 11.6m. Powered by
four Allison T56-A-15 turboprop
engines, it could reach a maximum
speed of 366 mph. It can carry 5
crewmembers and 92 passengers
or 64 airborne troops and so on. As
of 2006, more that 2,000 C-130s
have been produced. Each Hercules
costs around $62 million. Some are
on display in different museums
across the US.
