C17A Globemaster, RAF History:

The C-17 Globemaster III is a large American airlifter manufactured by Boeing Integrated Defense Systems. It is capable of rapid strategic delivery of troops and all types of cargo to main operating bases or directly to forward bases in the deployment area. It can also perform tactical airlift and airdrop missions, and transport litters and ambulatory patients during aeromedical evacuations when required. The aircraft takes its name from the C-74 Globemaster and the C-124 Globemaster II.

The design of the C-17 allows it to operate through small, austere airfields. The Globemaster III can take off and land on runways as short as 3,500 feet and only 90 feet wide. Even on such narrow runways, it can turn around using a three-point star turn and its backing capability.

The Royal Air Force received its first C-17 on May 17, 2001.
