USS John C Stennis CVN-74 History:

USS John C. Stennis CVN-74 is the seventh Nimitz-class nuclear-powered supercarrier in the United States Navy, named after Senator John C. Stennis.

USS John C. Stennis was christened at Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company with Vice President Albert Gore as the principal speaker of the ceremony. On December 9, 1995, USS John C. Stennis was commissioned at Naval Station Norfolk, Va. On February 26, 1998, USS John C. Stennis departed Norfolk to its new homeport, San Diego, California, after an intense work-up period. On April 16, 1999, USS John C. Stennis began sea trials. On November 30, 1999, USS John C. Stennis was towed back to its pier for maintenance and observation, after attempting to maneuver near Naval Air Station, North Island (NASNI) and caused the carriers two nuclear reactors to be shut down for a period of 45 minutes.

On January 7, 2000, USS John C. Stennis departed for its second deployment and traveled more than 34,000 miles over 13 time zones. It also made 10 port visits to South Korea, Hongkong, Malaysia, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Australia. USS John C. Stennis' embarked airwing, Carrier Air Wing Nine, had flown more than 10,000 sorties in several regions of the world, including over Iraq in support of Operation Southern Watch. On November 12, 2001, USS John C. Stennis Battle Group deployed from San Diego to relieve the Carl Vinson battle group in the Arabian Sea. On December 15, 2001, John C. Stennis Battle Group supported Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Anaconda.

On May 24, 2004 to November 1, 2004, USS John C. Stennis took part in Northern Edge 2004 in the Gulf of Alaska, Rim of the Pacific Exercise off Hawaii, exercises with the Kitty Hawk off Japan and goodwill visits to Japan, Malaysia and Western Australia. On January 8, 2005, USS John C. Stennis homeport moved from San Diego to Bremerton. On January 19, 2005, USS John C. Stennis began its 11 month Docking Planned Incremental Availability (DPIA) at Bremerton. Its upgrades include a new mast. On December 2005 to November 2006, USS John C. Stennis underwent sea trials and exercises. On January 20, 2007, USS John C. Stennis sailed for the Persian Gulf as part of an increase in US Military presence within the Middle East. On February 19, 2007, USS John C. Stennis arrived in the area, joining the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower in the United Fifth Fleet. On May 23, 2007, USS John C. Stennis, along with eight other warships including the USS Nimitz and amphibious assault ship USS Bonhomme Richard, passed through the Strait of Hormuz. On August 31, 2007, USS John C. Stennis returned to Bremerton. And on September 28, 2007, USS John C. Stennis will be dry-docked at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for a six-month Planned Incremental Availability (PIA) period and during that time, USS John C. Stennis will receive major upgrades to its potable water system, combat and self defense systems, navigational systems, electrical load centers and numerous other components.
