Douglas X-3 Stiletto History:
The X-3 Stiletto is an experimental jet aircraft manufactured by the Douglas Aircraft Company. Its primary mission was to investigate the design features of an aircraft suitable for sustained supersonic speeds.
The X-3 Stiletto was one of the experimental research planes which was undeniably built for speed. The X-3 though was sort of a disappointment, when the planned J46 engines never materialized and has a narrow fuselage have interfered with the desired speeds or altitude. However, the X-3's extremely long, narrow platform and shortspan wings revealed the remedy for roll-coupling (inertia coupling) and beneficially, all high speed aircraft have benefited from research conducted with the X-3. On June 30, 1945, more than two years before supersonic speeds had been reached, a contract was issued by the Secretary of War for the design and construction of two transonic research aircraft. The resulting X-3 was designed to reach the speed of Mach 2 and to sustain that speed for not less than 30 minutes. The final design of the X-3 was exotic.
On May 23, 1956, after NACA (now NASA) completed the X-3 test program, with only a single aircraft ever completed, it was returned to the Air Force, refurbished and was currently placed on display at the US Air force Musuem at Wright-Patterson AFB in Ohio.
