F-111 Aardvark with Movable Wings History:

The General Dynamics F-111 is a medium-range strategic bomber, reconnaissance and tactical strike aircraft designed in the 1960s.

The F-111 has several technologies pioneered for the military aircraft, including variable geometry wings, afterburning turbofan engines and terrain following radar for low-level, high-speed flight.  The aircraft's design was influential, particularly for Soviet engineers.  However, the F-111 suffered a variety of development problems and its designated roles, such as naval interception.

The F-111 was in service with the USAF from 1967 through 1998.  The aircraft entered active service with the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) in 1973 and is currently scheduled to remain with the RAAF until 2010.

The first production of F-111s were delivered on July 18, 1967 to the 428th, 429th and 430th Tactical Fighter Squadrons of the 47th Tactical Fighter Wing based at first out of Cannon AFB, New Mexico, which relocated to Nellis AFB in 1968.

The one surviving F-111 is on display at Wings Over the Rockets Air and Space Museum, Denver, Colorado and others currently residing at United States Air Force Museum, Air Force Flight Test Center Museum, Pima Air and Space Museum, United States Ai Force Museum and Castle Air Museum.

In USAF service, the F-111 has been effectively replaced by the F-15E Strike Eagle for medium-range precision strike missions, while the supersonic bomber role has been assumed by the B-1B Lancer.  The RAAF will replace its F-111s with 24 F/A-18F Super Hornets in 2010.

*Alteration on the design such as change of paint schemes and markings or embodied features on our models occurs at any time. Detachable stand is included with the model which may vary from the photo.
