History of the F-18 Hornet
Clear Canopy VFA-131
After returning home in
September 1990, the "Wildcats"
squadron traded in its F/A-18A
aircraft for the brand new F/A-18C
Lot XIII Night Strike Hornets. One
year later, after a rapid turnaround
training cycle, the squadron returned
to USS DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER
for a deployment that included
operations in the Mediterranean
Sea, Red Sea, Indian Ocean, and
Arabian Gulf in support of Operation
Desert Shield, and concluded with
operations above the Arctic Circle in
support of exercise TEAMWORK 92.
This was the first Night Strike Hornet
deployment in the Atlantic Fleet.
In September 1987, the
production and manufacturing of
F/A-18C Hornet began and ended in
1999. When the A-6 Intruder aircraft
retired in 1990, its part and
responsibility was filled by the F-18
Hornet. During the Operation Desert
Storm, the aircraft showed its
flexibility and dependability. It can
recover quickly and fast during war
even when it is destroyed and
damaged extremely.
It was also used in Operation
Southern Watch, Operation Enduring
Freedom and in Operation Iraqi
Freedom. In May 2005, two F/A-18C
Hornets smashed at each other in
Iraq. An accident also happened
when a patriot missile hit an F/A-18
Hornet. The F/A-18C and F/A-18A
Hornet models are the only aircrafts
that have single seats unlike the F/A-
18B and the F/A-18D models that
have dual seats. The dual Hornet
seats are the models that are
completely capable in battles. The
aircraft has the ground mapping
capacity that allows its crew to find
and hit the target even with poor
visibility and in bad weather
conditions. In 1994, the aircraft
received an upgrade on its radar that
provided a more accurate radar
displays.
*Alteration on the design such as change of paint schemes and markings or embodied features on our models occurs at any time. Detachable stand is included with the model which may vary from the photo.
