F/A-18 Hornet Navy History:

The McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet traces its direct ancestry back to the Northrop Cobra, a twin engine, mid-wing, multi-mission tactical fighter jet developed for the export market in the late 1960s. F/A-18 Hornet is a contemporary all-weather carrier-capable strike fighter aircraft, designed to assault both land and aerial targets. Designed in the 1970s for service with the U. S. Navy and U. S. Marine Corps, the Hornet is used by the air forces of several nations.

The F/A-18 Hornets has been the aerial show aircraft for the U. S. Navy's Blue Angels Flight Demonstration Squadron since 1986. The Hornets are presently operating in 37 tactical squadrons from air stations world-wide, and from 10 aircraft carriers. The Hornet comprises the aviation strike force for seven international customers including Canada, Australia, Finland, Kuwait, Malaysia, Spain and Switzerland.

The main missions of the F/A-18 Hornet are primarily fighter escort, fleet air defense; while the attack missions are force projection, interdiction, close air support and reconnaissance. The F/A-18C and D models are the outcome of a block upgrade in 1987 incorporating provisions for employing updated missiles and jamming devices against enemy ordnance.
