Designed and manufactured by McDonnell Douglas which is Boeing Northrop now, the F/A-18 Hornet is an all-weather aircraft and used as an attack aircraft as well as a fighter. In its fighter mode, the F/A-18 is used primarily as a fighter escort and for fleet air defense; in its attack mode, it is used for force projection, interdiction and close and deep air support.
In the 1970s, the F/A-18 Hornet was designed for service with the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps. The Hornet is also used by the air forces of several other nations. The Blue Angels have been using Boeing F/A-18 Hornets for aerial demonstration since 1986.

It’s the Blue Angels, the U.S. Navy’s squadron of F/A-18 Hornet strike fighters, whose skillful and daring maneuvers win respect around the world. The year 1946 marked the first performance of the Blue Angels, inspired by Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, Chief of Naval Operations. The 17-minute shows were meant to maintain the public’s interest in naval aviation after World War II. Shows today are approximately 45 minutes.
