History of the F2
Buffalo
Built by Brewster Aeronautical
Corporation, the Brewster F2A
Buffalo is an American fighter aircraft
introduced in April 1939. Its first flight
occurred on December 2, 1937. It
was the first monoplane fighter
aircraft used by the US Navy, and it
saw limited service during World
War II. It was no match for the
Japanese Zero earning it the
nickname ''flying coffin.'' The plane
retired in 1948. There are only 3
surviving Buffalos, of which two are
just replicas. Most of the Buffalos
were sold off for scrap or service in
other countries due to its poor
construction.
The F2 Buffalo had a wingspan
of 10.7m, length of 7.9m, and height
of 3.63m. Powered by a Wright R-
1820-34 Cyclone engine, it could fly
at a maximum speed of 301 mph. It
was equipped with a .30 caliber
Browning AN machine gun and .50
caliber M2 Browning machine gun. It
had a range of 1,600 km and could
fly up to 33,000 ft.
