History of the F4U Corsair
USMC VMF-214
Introduced on December 28,
1942, the F4U Corsair was built by
the Chance Vought company. The
carrier-capable fighter plane
primarily served in World War II and
the Korean War. It was regarded as
the most fearsome American aircraft
by some Japanese pilots. Because
of its good reputation, demands
increased greatly that Goodyear and
Brewster started producing
Corsairs, too. Produced between
1940 and 1952, 12,571 Corsairs
were built. Its successor was the
F2G Super Corsair aircraft. The F4U
was the first US Navy aircraft to
feature fully-retractable landing gear
in a similar manner to that of the
Curtiss P-40 in that the oleo struts
rotated through 90 degrees during
retraction.
The F4U Corsair' first variant
had a wingspan of 12.5m, height of
4.9m, and length of 10.1m. Powered
by a Pratty & Whitney R-2800-8W
radial engine, it could reach a
maximum speed of 425 mph. It
carried four .50 caliber M2 Browning
machine guns, four rockets or up to
2,000 lbs of bombs.
