J2F Duck, Navy History:
The J2F Ducks are a three-seat
utility amphibian used in a variety of
roles from land bases and carriers,
including patrol, photo survey and
rescue. With its powerful R1820-54
engine, the Duck had a range of 750
miles and a ceiling of 25,000 ft.
The J2F aircraft or Duck was made
by Loening Aeronautical
Engineering Corporation. The J2F
Duck is a single engine amphibious
biplane manufactured from 1933
until 1945. The Duck aircraft was
used by the US Navy and Coast
Guard in several missions such as
mapping, rescue work, photography
and target training. It is said that the
J2F Duck was a flying boat since its
main pontoon was part of the
fuselage. The J2F aircraft may have
some similarities to a conventional
landplane.
The J2F Duck is capable of taking off
and touching down on land and
water. In late 1941, Captain Miller
was asked by the president of
Columbia Aircraft to lead the test
flight program for another strange
looking hybrid by the J2F Duck
aircraft. Captain Miller encountered
some struggles in operating the J2F
Duck but he was still able to land at
Floyd Bennett Field, a formal Naval
base in Brooklyn.
The J2F Duck is not really a
fighter plane but is more of a
scouting and transport aircraft. The
design of the J2F allowed it to
efficiently land on the surface of the
water, thus, it was also called the
amphibious plane. In history, there
were around 330 J2F Ducks that
were made. The J2F Duck was even
used in the movie, "Murphy's War". In
July 1941, the last Duck aircraft was
built. This time, various new featured
were included, the Power of the
Wright Cyclone was raised to 950
hp, the design returned the broad
chord engine cowling of the Pratt-
Whitney and increase of bomb load.
*Alteration on the design such as change of paint schemes and markings or embodied features on our models occurs at any time. Detachable stand is included with the model which may vary from the photo.
