Lockheed Vega History:

The Vega is a six-passenger monoplane which became famous for its use by a number of record breaking pilots who were attracted to the rugged and very long-ranged design.

Vega was originally intended to serve with Lockheed's own airline routes.  The first Vega 1 was named the Golden Eagle.  In July 4, 1927, it flew from Lockheed's Los Angeles plant.  It could cruise at 120 mph and has a top speed of 135 mph.  However, the four-passenger (plus one pilot) load was considered too small for airline use.  A number of private owners placed orders for the design, however, by the end of 1928, they had produced 68 of this original design.  In the 1928 National Air Races in Cleveland, Vegas won every speed award.  In 1929, a quest for design improvement, Lockheed delivered the Vega.  Pratt & Whitney R-1340 Wasp engine of 450 hp (336 kW) was added to improve weights, allowing two more seats.  A new NACA cowling increased cruise speed to 155 mph and top speed to 165 mph.  Vega has a maximum speed of 185 mph and a range of 725 mi.

There were sixty-four Vega 5s built and in 1931, the US Air Corps bought two Vega 5s, one was designated as C-12 and the other one was designated C-17.  Both Wiley Post's Winnie Mae and Amelia Earhart's Vegas are on display in the National Air and Space Museum.  There were other four Vegas which were believed to exist, with one still in flying condition.
