About the C-124 Globemaster
Introduced in 1950, the Douglas C-124 Globemaster was built by the Douglas Aircraft Company in Long Beach, California. First deliveries of the aircraft started in May 1950 until 1955. The heavy-lift military cargo aircraft was primarily used until the C-141 Starlifter was produced. The C-124 first flew on November 27, 1949. It was developed from the design of the C-74 Globemaster aircraft. Powered by four Pratt & Whitney R-4360 Wasp Major radial engines, it could fly to maximum speed of 320 mph. It has a wingspan of 53.06m, length of 40m and height of 14.7m. It could carry 6 crewmembers.
During its time, the C-124 Globemaster was the only aircraft able to transport heavy equipment such as bulldozers and tanks. There were 448 Globemasters built and only 9 are surviving. It was used during the Korean War, Vietnam War and Operation Deep Freeze in Antarctica. The USAF's C-124s retired in 1974. It was nicknamed ''Old Shakey.''
