About the F4F Wildcat Joe Foss
Manufactured by Grumman, the F4F Wildcat was a carrier-based fighter plane introduced in December 1940. Its maiden flight was on September 2, 1937. It began its service in the US Navy and British Royal Navy in 1940. It didn't compete well against the Mitsubishi Zero in the Pacific Theater but its defense was greater than its Japanese rival. If it was used by an expert pilot, it would prove to be a difficult foe against the Zero. The Wildcat played a major role in the defense of Wake Island and the Guadalcanal Campaign.
Joe Foss was the top scoring Wildcat ace with 26 victories. The F4F Wildcat had a wingspan of 11.58m, height of 3.60m, and length of 8.76m. Powered by Pratt & Whitney R-1830-76 double-row radial engine, it could reach a maximum speed of 331 mph. It was equipped with four .50 caliber M2 Browning machine guns and two bombs or drop tanks.
