About the F6F Hellcat David Mc Campbell
Manufactured by Grumman, the F6F Hellcat was introduced in 1943. The carrier-based fighter plane first flew on June 26, 1942. It was developed to replace the F4F Wildcat. Some called it the ''Wildcat's big brother.'' The Hellcat was the first US Navy fighter plane which was designed based from studying the Japanese A6M Zero aircraft. Destroying 5,271 aircraft, it proved to be the most successful aircraft in naval history. Each Hellcat costs $35,000 in 1945. There were 12,275 Hellcats built.
The F6F Hellcat had a wingspan of 13.06m, a length of 10.24m, and a height of 3.99m. It could fly up to 37,300 ft. Powered by Pratt & Whitney R-2800-10W Double Wasp two-row radial engine with a two- speed two-stage supercharger, it had a maximum speed 380 mph. It had 3-blade Hamilton Standard propellers. Each propeller was 4m in diameter. It was equipped with machine guns rockets, bombs, and torpedoes.
