About the Harrier GR9 RAF

The Harrier GR9 is a second generation vertical/short takeoff and landing jet aircraft used by the British Royal Air Force and the Royal Navy. It is a heavily updated version of the GR7, incorporating the ability to use a wide range of advanced precision weaponry, new communications, and systems and airframe upgrades. It was developed from the Hawker Siddeley Harrier aircraft and is closely related to the American-built AV-8B Harrier II. It first flew on April 30, 1985 and was introduced in December 1989.

In RAF service, Harriers are used in the ground attack and reconnaissance roles. The primary air-to-air missile of the aircraft is the infrared-homing AIM-9 Sidewinder (the combination of Harrier and Sidewinder proved effective against Argentinean Mirages in the Falklands conflict), but it does not carry the medium range AIM-120 AMRAAM missile. Powered by a Rolls-Royce Pegasus Mk. 105 vectored thrust turbofan engine, it could reach a maximum speed of 662 mph.
