About the USS Nassau LHA-4 

The USS Nassau LHA-4 is a Tarawa-class amphibious assault ship, capable of transporting over 3,000 Navy and Marine Corps personnel.

In October 1979, USS Nassau deployed to reinforce the U.S. Naval Base at Guantamano Bay, Cuba.  It received the Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation just 70 days after commissioning.  In April 1981, USS Nassau departed for a short notice deployment to the Mediterranean in 68 consecutive days, standing ready to effect the evacuation of U.S. citizens from Lebanon.  In January 1982, USS Nassau deployed to the Mediterranean Sea and participated in four amphibious operations.  It returned to Norfolk in June, and then departed in August to take a part in NATO Exercises Bold Guard and Northern Wedding in northern Europe.  In 1983, it participated in the annual amphibious Exercise Solid Shield.  In January 1984, USS Nassau deployed to northern Europe for Teamwork 84 and returned to Norfolk in August and completed an extensive ship repair availability.  In 1985, USS Nassau served as a flagship for Exercise Universal Trek.  It participated in it 2nd Solid Shield Exercise.  In February 1986, USS Nassau began a 10 month complex overhaul.  It began an intensive series of repair availabilities and training periods.  On September 29, 1987, USS Nassau departed Naval Station Norfolk as flagship of Marine Amphibious Readiness Group (MARG) 4-87.
