The Tuskegee Airmen is the popular name of the group of African American pilots who flew with distinction during World War II as the 332nd Fighter Group of the US Army Air Corps. Thurston Gaines of Freeport, New York attended Howard University in Washington DC before he was drafted in 1943. He graduated from flight training on August 4, 1944 at Tuskegee Army Air Field, Alabama. He was soon deployed to Italy with the 99th Fighter Sqaudron - part of the 332nd Fighter Group. Gaines flew his first combat mission in February 1945.
