History of the P-38 Mac
Donald
In 1937, the P-38 Lightning was
designed as a high-altitude
interceptor. The P-38 evolved for
several years before entering
combat service with all theaters of
World War II. In 1942, P-38s
participated in operations during the
North African campaign. The P-38
was used extensively as a long-
range escort fighter. The P-38 was
also used for dive bombing, level
bombing, ground strafing and photo
reconnaissance missions. The P-
38 underwent many modifications.
In 1945, by the end of P-38
production, there had been 9,923 P-
38s built. The P-38 was
redesignated the F-38, and was
deemed surplus in 1949. Currently,
there are only 27 P-38s which still
exist.
The P-38 has taken on several
different roles including level
bombing, dive bombing, photo
reconnaissance, ground strafing
and long-range escort fighting. Its
most extensive and successful
missions were in the Pacific Theater
of Operations and the China-Burma-
India Theater of Operations, where it
was flown by the American pilots
with the highest number of aerial
victories to date. In the former, the P-
38 was credited with destroying
more Japanese aircraft than any
other USAAF fighter. The design
achieved maximum performance by
pairing the best available engine on
one air frame. It was the most
recognizable fighter of the era, and
was in continuous production
throughout the War.
*Alteration on the design such as change of paint schemes and markings or embodied features on our models occurs at any time. Detachable stand is included with the model which may vary from the photo.
