PB2Y Coronado History:
The PB2Y Coronado was a large flying boat patrol bomber designed by Consolidated Aircraft. After deliveries of the PBY Catalina, also a Consolidated aircraft, began in 1935, the U.S. Navy began planning for the next generation of patrol bombers. Orders for two prototypes, the XPB2Y-1 and the Sikorsky XPBS-1, were placed in 1936; the prototype Coronado first flew in December of 1937.
The PB2Y Coronados had served in the Pacific in bombing and anti-submarine roles. The PB2Y Coronado was used as a maritime patrol bomber by the British Royal Air Force Coastal Command. The aircraft that were supplied to the Royal Air Force under lend-lease were used as transports and served with RAF Transport Command. The Coronados were used for transatlantic flights, staging through the RAF base at Darrell's Island and Puerto Rico, though also used for delivery of vital cargo and equipment in a transportation network, stretching down both sides of the Atlantic, from Newfound, to Brazil and to Nigeria and other parts of Africa. The primary users and operators of the PB2Y Coronado are the United States Navy and the Royal Air Force. There were 217 PB2Y Coronados built.
