Founded in 1790 as the Revenue Cutter Service, the modern Coast Guard is a combination of the Revenue Cutter Service and several smaller entities, including the Life Saving Service and the Lighthouse Service. In peace, the Coast Guard?s mission has always focused on two primary objectives: the enforcement of maritime law, and the protection of life and property at sea. In war, the Coast Guard serves with the Navy, and has done so with distinction in every major American conflict.
