F/A-22 Raptor History:
The F-22 was changed into F/A-22 Raptor by the Air Force leaders. The F-22 is a combination of stealth, supercruise, maneuverability, integrated avionics and improved supportability. It performs both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions, making it vital to the USAF. The Raptor is capable of providing first-kill opportunities against threats. Its sophisticated aerodesign, advanced flight controls, thrust vectoring and high thrust-to-weight ratio provide the capability to outmaneuver all current and projected aircraft.
The F/A" designates the Raptor as a "fighter" and an "attack" aircraft. As we'll see, the F/A-22 incorporates the latest approaches to avoiding detection along with a mind-boggling array of weapons and technology to succeed at both missions.
The F/A-22 was originally designed to replace the F-15 Eagle. Because of the Eagle's versatility, the rising cost of developing the F/A-22 and the changing world scene, the Raptor now supplements the F-15 instead of replacing it. When the F/A-22 program began in the early 1980s, the Air Force wanted a fighter to counter the threat from the Soviet Union. Since the end of the Cold War, the need for an air-superiority fighter has fallen: Pentagon war planners expect future conflicts to be fought against enemies with small air forces or none at all. The F/A18 Raptor is powered by Two Pratt & Whitney F119-PW-100 engines capable of supercruise and thrust vectoring and has a speed of Mach 1.8 (supercruise: Mach 1.5).
