RQ1 Predator UAV
History:
The RQ-1 Predator (also known
as MQ-1) is an unmanned aerial
vehicle (UAV) that serves as a
reconnaissance role and it can also
carry and use two AGM-114 Hellfire
missiles. The aircraft has
been in service since 1995 and
been in combat over Afghanistan,
Bosnia, Serbia, Iraq and
Yemen.
The RQ-1 Predator is a system,
not just plain aircraft. The
Predator system was initially
designated the RQ-1 Predator. The
"R" stands for reconnaissance while
the "Q" means unmanned aircraft
system and the "1" described it as
being the first of a series of
purpose-built unmanned
reconnaissance aircraft
systems. The Air Force
officially changed the designation to
MQ-1 with the "M" for multi-role.
The RQ-1 Predator program
began as a quick reaction Advanced
Concept Technology Demonstration
(ACTD) program. A
competitive contract was awarded to
General Atomics Aeronautical
Systems, Inc.
Predator first flew in July 1994,
with less than one year after contract
award. By late 1996,
subsequent testing was conducted
over the next two years.
In June 1996, the Predator
completed its 30-month trial
Advanced Concept Technology
Demonstrations (ACTD) and was
sent to the Air Force Air Combat
Command's 11th Reconnaissance
Squadron, Nellis AFB, Nevada in
September of the same year.
Predator has been in over 1,000
missions and 8,000 flight hours in
various combat deployments.
Predator is currently operational with
the United States Air Force 11th and
15th Reconnaissance
Squadrons.
