History of the S2F
Tracker
During the 1960s, the Grumman
S2F "Tracker" was considered one
of the more prominent tools of
Western naval power. It served as
the basis for the "Trader" transport
and "Tracer" early-warning aircraft.
This compact carrier-based aircraft
provided a capable platform for
ocean patrol and sub-hunting, and
The US Navy finalized its ideas on a
carrier-based submarine hunter or
killer aircraft in the late 1940s.
The Grumman S2F Tracker was
designed to meet this role and first
flew in 1952. The S2F was re-
designated as the S-2 in 1962 and
not phased out until replaced by the
Lockheed S-3 Viking in the mid-
1970s. Variants of the Tracker were
also used as transports (the C-1
Trader) and Airborne Early Warning
aircraft (the E-1 Tracer). The original
designation of S2F led to this
aircraft's other nickname which is S-
Two-F or "Stoof".
The S2F Tracker is powered by
two 1,525 hp Wright engines and
manned by a crew of four (two pilots,
two radar operators), the S-2
grossed out at 26,867 lbs, had a
maximum speed of 253 mph and a
range of 1150 statute miles. The last
front-line "Trackers" were retired
from active duty in 1976. A raining
version, the TS-2A, remained in
service until 1979.
The S-2F Tracker was a mid-
50s vintage carrier-based anti-
submarine search and attack
aircraft. It is the first dedicated
carrier-borne ASW aircraft to
combine hunter/killer roles in one
airframe.
