Spad XIII as flown by
"Eddie" Rickenbacker History:
The S.XIII is a biplane fighter
aircraft manufactured by Societe
Pour LAviation et ses Derives
(SPAD). It was designed by Louis
Bechereau and its maiden flight was
on the 4th of April 1917. Its primary
users are the Aeronautique Militaire,
Royal Flying Corps, and the United
States Army Air Service. The SPAD
S.XIII is said to be the most capable
fighter aircraft during the war and it
was one of the most-produced
having built of about 8,472 of it.
In 1916, the SPAD S.VII entered the
service but it was surpassed by the
latest German scouts in 1917.
Georges Guynemer, French flying
ace, entered an improved version.
The S.XII was first produced by
SPAD designer Louis but there are
some flaws that need to be changed
so they finally came up with the new
version, the S.XIII.
The S.XIII is different from those of
its predecessor. It has a number of
aerodynamic and refinements
including its larger wings. These
improvements helped the aircraft to
achieve greater increase in flight
and combat performance. But just
like other aircrafts, out of those
positive characteristics the aircraft
still has its own flaws such as its
poor maneuverability especially at
low speeds.
Captain Eddie Rickenbacker
scored 21 of his 26 victories in the
Spad. Powered by a 220 hp
Hispano-Suiza, the plane could
cruise for two hours and attain
speeds of nearly 130 mph.
*Alteration on the design such as change of paint schemes and markings or embodied features on our models occurs at any time. Detachable stand is included with the model which may vary from the photo.
