F-18E Super Hornet History:
The US Navy F/A-18E/F Super Hornet is a maritime strike attack aircraft manufactured by Boeing. The E model can only accommodate 1 pilot, while the F model can accommodate 2 crews (pilot and co-pilot). The F/A-18E/F Super Hornet is powered by Two F414-GE-400 turbofan engines rated at 22,000 lb (9,977 kg) static thrust each. The F/A-18E/F Super Hornet has the following dimensions: Length - 60.1 feet, Wingspan - 44.8 feet and Height – 16 feet (4.87 meters). The empty weight is 30,000 pounds and its maximum take-off weight is 66,000 pounds (29,932 kg).
The F/A-18E/F Super Hornet USN flew for the first time on November 29 1995. The first low-rate initial production aircraft was delivered in December 1998, and all 12 of the first batch were delivered by November 1999. The first full-rate production aircraft was delivered in September 2001. Over 200 aircraft have been delivered. A second multi-year contract was signed in January 2004 for 42 aircraft to be purchased between 2005 and 2009. Total requirement is for at least 545 aircraft. In July 2002, the F/A-18E/F began its maiden operational deployment on board USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72).
