F-14A Tomcat History:
The F-14 Tomcat is an interceptor / multi-role fighter aircraft manufactured by Grumman. It first flew on December 21, 1970 and introduced in September 1974. The F-14 was the United States Navy's primary maritime air superiority fighter, fleet defense interceptor and tactical reconnaissance platform from 1974 to 2006. It entered service in 1974 with the U.S. Navy, replacing the F-4 Phantom II. It was later exported to the former Imperial Iranian Air Force in 1976, during a time when the US still had good relations with Iran. It was retired from the active U.S. Navy fleet on September 22 2006, having been replaced by the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet.
The U.S Navy began taking delivery of the first production F-14A models in the early 1970s. However, these aircraft were hampered by inadequate Pratt & Whitney TF30 engines that limited the Tomcat's performance and reliability. Several aircraft were eventually upgraded to the F-14A+ standard (later known as the F-14B) that added much improved General Electric F110 engines. The Grumman F-14A Tomcat was designed to provide the Fleet with a Mach 2.0 (twice the speed of sound) air superiority fighter capable of fleet defense at both long and short range. It can be armed with a variety of air-to-air missiles and the MK 61A1 20MM "Gatling Gun." The F-14A Tomcat first flew on December 21, 1970. The final F-14A squadron was retired in 2004 (September 8). A total of 557 F-14A built.
