AC-130U Spooky Gunship History:
The Lockheed AC-130U Spooky variant is a fixed-wing, side-firing aerial gunship that provides close air support, air interdiction and force protection. Primarily used by the United States Air Force, The AC-130U Gunship is equipped with the AN/APQ-180, a synthetic aperture radar for long-range target detection and identification. The gunship's navigational devices include inertial navigation systems and a Global Positioning System. The AC-130U employs technologies developed in the 1990s and can attack two targets simultaneously.
Close air support missions of the AC-130U Spooky include troops in contact, convoy escort and urban operations. Air interdiction missions are conducted against preplanned targets or targets of opportunity. Force protection missions include air base defense and facilities defense. Secondary missions of the Gunship include armed reconnaissance, forward air control, limited command and control, and combat search and rescue. Although the AC-130U conducts some operations in daylight, majority of its combat missions are conducted at night.
The U-model gunship is one of the most complex aircraft weapon systems in the world today, containing more than 609,000 lines of software in its mission computers and avionics systems. Although it still uses the venerable Lockheed C-130 airframe, the AC-130U incorporates the latest sensor technology, along with an entirely new fire-control system, to substantially increase the gunship's combat effectiveness.
