OV-10D Bronco History:
The North American Rockwell OV-10 Bronco is a special aircraft for counter insurgency (COIN) combat, developed in response to a specification approved by the United States Navy, Air Force and Army that was issued at the end of 1963. It is a fixed-wing, turboprop-driven light attack and observation aircraft with mission capabilities that resemble that of a fast, long-range and ultra-heavy attack helicopter. It can carry three tons of external munitions and loiter for more than three hours. The Bronco was first acquired by the US Marine Corps and operated as a forward air controller through July 1994.
The OV-10D is the second generation Bronco developed by the USMC. An extensively modified A model airframe, it added a powerful Forward-Looking Infrared night-vision system with a camera mounted in a turret under an extended nose. It has a long nose with a ball turret underneath, and bigger engines than the A variant. Other noticeable external differences on the D model are the square chaff dispensers midway down the booms and infrared-suppressive exhaust stacks. The OV-10D started out as the NOGS program.
In 1994, the OV-10 Bronco was officially retired in the United States. However, in other countries, it is still being used for light attack counter insurgency missions, border patrol, anti-piracy patrol, forward air control, surveillance, defense mapping, and search and rescue.
