F-14 Tomcat VF-111 Sundowners History:

F-14 Tomcat is a supersonic fighter manufactured by Grumman designed to attack and destroy enemy aircraft at night and in all-weather conditions.  The F-14 can track up to 24 targets simultaneously with its advanced weapons control system and attack six with Phoenix AIM-54A missiles while continuing to scan the airspace.  The F-14 is the only US plane capable of carrying the long-range Phoenix misile, which can fire at targets from distances of about 80 miles.  Armament includes a mix of other air intercept misiles, rockets and bombs.  The F-14 Tomcat's swing-wing could be controlled manually by the pilot or shifted automatically according to the plane's speed.  The multiple tasks of navigation, target acquisition, electronic countermeasures (ECM) and weapons firing are divided between the pilot and the radar intercept officer (RIO).

Early 2006, only 22 F-14 Tomcats remained in service, aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt.  All F-14 fleet squadrons are now located at NAS Oceana except for one squadron which is located at NAF Atsugi.  In October 1978, Squadron VF-111 began transition to the F-14 Tomcat and made two deployments with the USS Kitty Hawk.
