T-38 Talon History:The Northrop T-38 Talon, also known as "The White Rocket", is the US Air Force's primary twin-engine, high-altitude, supersonic jet trainer. T-38 had its first flight on March 10, 1959 then first introduced March 17, 1961. The T-38 Talon was designed by Edgar Schmued. More than 1,100 were delivered to the Air Force between 1961 and 1972 when production ended.
The USAF T-38 trainers are primarily used by Air Education and Training Command for joint specialized undergraduate pilot training (JSUPT), but the aircraft are also used by Air Combat Command for its Companion Training Program and by Air Force Materiel Command to test experimental equipment. NASA uses T-38 aircraft as trainers for astronauts and as observers and chase planes on programs such as the space shuttle. Pilots from NATO countries are also trained on the T-38 at Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas, through the Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training Program. In addition, the Talon is used by NASA as a chase aircraft, and has served as a trainer in Singapore, Taiwan, Germany, and Portugal. The US Navy also operates at least three Talons at its Patuxent River NAS Test Pilot's School, and the Boeing Company flies a small handful as chase aircraft.
It remains operational as of 2007 by the USAF, which remains its largest user, and also in other Air Forces throughout the world.
