Bell P-59 Airacomet History:

The Bell P-59 Airacomet was a fighter aircraft built in the United States during World War II. The prototype XP-59A became the first jet-powered aircraft to fly in the US on October 1, 1942. The Army Air Force was not impressed by its performance and cancelled the contract when fewer than half of the aircraft ordered had been produced. Although no P59s went into combat, it paved the way for another design generation of US turbojet-powered aircraft and was the first turbojet fighter to have its turbojet engine and inlet nacelles integrated within the main fuselage.

Most P-59 Airacomets were sent to the 412th Fighter Group of the Fourth Air Force based at Muroc Dry Lake and served as trainer.  P-59 Airacomets provided the USAAF with valuable orientation experience in the use of jet aircraft and furnished a nucleus of trained jet pilots.  Airacomets historic significance provided a lot of important data on the care and maintenance of jet aircraft, having proved invaluable when more advanced jet fighters entered service.
