Heinkel He-111 History:

The He-111 was the Luftwaffe's only mass-produced heavy bomber, even though it had only two engines. It was regarded as a medium bomber by US standards.

The Heinkel He 111 was mostly based on the Heinkel He 70 Blitz that entered the Lufthansa service in 1934. Heinkel was asked by Lufthansa to make a larger airliner that could carry ten passengers. Heinkel took action by creating a larger twin-engined type of the He 70. It has the same tail plane and elliptical wings. It was examined by Reich Air Ministry and they asked Heinkel to make a version of a bomber.

Two prototypes of models were produced by Heinkel: a commercial and a bomber. In February 24, 1935, the He 111a, the first bomber prototype, was the first aircraft on the air. Its maximum speed was 216 mph. It was followed by the He 111b, the second bomber type. The only difference between the two is the reduced wingspan. The aircrafts also has better visibility.

Heinkel moved on to He 111e when the model was discarded by the Luftwaffe because of its poor performance. It is equipped with a Daimler-Benz DB 600A which improved its performance. The Luftwaffe was pleased and ordered more production.

The commercial types started with the He 111c model. The first flight of the He 111c was in March 1935. It also entered the Lufthansa service in the same year. Later on, the He 111d followed and entered the Lufthansa in 1936 and 1937. All in all, the He 111 has 60 variants and more than 7,000 were made.
