The G4M- Allied reporting-name 'Betty' - was the main heavy bomber of the Japanese Navy during World War II. It was remarkable for its long range, but this was achieved by depriving the aircraft of armour while providing it with huge fuel tanks.
The G4M is a Twin-engine heavy bomber aircraft. It was manufactured by Mitsubishi and its maiden flight was on the 23rd of October 1939. It was introduced commercially in June of 1941 and retired in 1945. The aircraft’s primary user was the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War II.
The G4M Betty has some similarities with other twin engine bombers aircraft in regard to its performance and missions. Such aircrafts are the Ju 88, the B-25 Mitchell, and the B-26 Marauder. They were used as an anti-shipping aircraft and as torpedo bombers with the exception of the B-25.
On April 18, 1943, an incident involving a G4M is said to be the most popular thing that happened in the history of the Betty aircraft. On that date the aircraft that was carrying IJN Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto was successfully intercepted by the American P-38 Lightnings.
