HMS Bounty History:
A coal carrying merchant ship operating on the coast of England, named the "Bethia", was purchased by the Admiralty, renamed the Bounty, and recommissioned in 1787 for a special mission.
The Bounty was incredibly small when one considers her mission. She was 90 feet 10 inches long with a beam of 24 feet 4 inches and a draft of 11 feet 4 inches. She had no superstructures; all accommodations and facilities were below deck. Her three masts varied in height from 48 to 59 feet. There were three yards on the fore- and mainmasts, two on the mizzenmast. Under the bowsprit there was a figurehead portraying a woman in a riding habit.
HMS Bounty was originally a merchant ship was built at Hull in 1784. In 1787, the ship was purchased by the Admiralty for a voyage into the deep Pacific. The order for this expedition had been prompted by an interest of the British authorities in the West Indies of a proposal to introduce the Tahitian breadfruit to the colonies. It was argued that this crop would be suitable for the slave workers on the sugar plantations as it was cheap to produce and could grow throughout the year. In May 1787, after a consultation with Sir Joseph Banks, the President of the Royal Society, King George III issued an order to the Admiralty to pursue the challenge of transporting breadfruit seedlings to the Caribbean.
The HMS Bounty is also famous for being featured in "Mutiny on the Bounty" starred by Marlon Brando as Fletcher Christian. And currently, HMS Bounty was featured in "Pirates of the Caribbean - Dead Man's Chest" starring Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow.
