Tucano T1 RAF
History:
The Tucano T1 is a trainer
aircraft manufactured by Short
Brothers. The primary users and
operators of the Tucano T1 are the
Royal Air Force, Kenya Air Force and
Kuwait Air Force.
The Tucano was developed by the
Short Brothers company as a
replacement for the Jet Provost, the
basic trainer for the RAF. In 1985,
the Tucano was selected in
preference to the Swiss Pilatus PC-
9 and the British Hunting
Firecracker. In 1989, The Tucano
has been operated primarily from
No 1 Flying Training School at RAF
Linton-on-Ouse to provide basic
training to RAF and RN student
pilots. The deployment is officially to
72 Squadron, 207 Squadron and 76
Squadron. During training course,
student pilots fly around 130 hours
on the Tucano before progressing to
the Hawk T1 aircraft at RAF Valley.
The Tucano has been operationally
proven to be 70% cheaper than its
predecessor. The Tucano has a
greater range and endurance than
the Provost and it can fly two
consecutive sorties before being
refueled. It has a climb rate to
15,000 ft in six minutes.
The Tucano T1 has a crew of 1 to 2.
It has a maximum speed of 274
knand a range of 900 nmi. It
incorporates a Garrett TPE331-12B
turboprop. Armament include a
provision for 1,000 lb of stores on
four underwing hardpoints, but not
on UK Tucanos.
*Alteration on the design such as change of paint schemes and markings or embodied features on our models occurs at any time. Detachable stand is included with the model which may vary from the photo.
