USS Enterprise CVN-65 History:
USS Enterprise (CVN-65) is the world's first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier and the longest carrier in the US Navy at 1,123 feet. At the time of her commissioning, she was assigned the hull number CVAN-65, which classified her as a nuclear-powered attack aircraft carrier. On July 1, 1975, the “A” for attack was removed to better reflect her multi-mission capabilities, changing her hull number to CVN-65.
On April 28, 1986, Enterprise became the first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier to transit the Suez Canal. She sailed from the Red Sea to the Mediterranean to relieve USS Coral Sea, on station off the coast of Libya. In December 1989 she participated in Operation Classic Resolve, President Bush's response to Philippine President Corazon Aquino's request for air support during a rebel coup attempt.
In December 1996, Enterprise made the fastest transit ever conducted from off of Bosnia to the Persian Gulf in support of strikes against Iraq. The transit took less than six days and resulted in peace being restored to the region.
On September 11, 2001, Enterprise was beginning her voyage home from the Persian Gulf when her crew saw on the news that the World Trade Center and Pentagon have been attacked by terrorists. Without orders, the ship turned about and headed back to the waters off Southwest Asia near the Persian Gulf. The next day, Enterprise aircraft were the first to strike with bombing raids over Afghanistan.
Currently, Enterprise is still in active service, making her one of the oldest carriers in the fleet. She is scheduled for decommissioning some time in 2014 or 2015.
