USS Nimitz CVN-68 History:

USS Nimitz CVN-68 is the lead ship supercarrier of its class in the United States and is one of the largest warships in the world.

Nimitz first deployment was on July 7, 1976.  The deployment marked the first time in ten years in Mediterranean that nuclear-powered ships were deployed there.  In November 1976, Nimitz was awarded the coveted Battle "E" from Commander of Naval Air forces Atlantic fleet for being the most efficient and foremost aircraft carrier in the Atlantic Fleet.  After its seventh deployment, Nimitz returned home to Norfolk on February 7, 1977.  On December 1, 1977, Nimitz sailed again toward the Mediterranean Sea.  During its third cruise to the Mediterranean on September 10, 1979, tensions heightened after 52 American hostages were taken in Iran, Tehran.  Four months later, there was an attempt to rescue the hostages in Operation Evening Light but the mission was aborted in the Iranian Desert when the number of operational helicopters fell below the minimum needed to transport the attack force and hostages out of Iran.  Another incident happened in the night of May 25 when an EA-6B Prowler crash-landed on the flight deck, killing 14 crewmen and injuring 45 others.  Upon its fourth deployment on August 18 and 19 1981, Nimitz and USS Forrestal conducted an open ocean missile exercise in the Gulf of Sidra.

In November 1995, Nimitz commenced deployment to the Western Pacific, Indian Ocean, Arabian Gulf and to the waters of Taiwan.  On September 1, 1997 was Nimitz latest deployment.  On May 26, 1998, Nimitz started a mid-life refuelling overhaul, enabling a second quarter century of service.  Nimitz rejoined the fleet midway through 2001.  In January 2002, Nimitz began a four-month Post-Shakedown Availability at Naval Air Station, North Island and in May 2002, Nimitz prepared for overseas deployment and conducted sea trials.

Nimitz has four main engines, propellers, catapults and arresting gear cables.  Nimitz reaches over 18 stories high.  There are eight steam turbine generators producing 8,000 kilowatts of electric power, which is enough to serve a small city.  Nimitz also has a wide array of departments such as food department, barber shop, post office, dental facility and medical department.
