V-22 Osprey History:

The V-22 Osprey is a joint service, multi-mission, military tilt rotor aircraft with both a vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) and short takeoff and landing capability (STOL). It is designed to perform missions like a conventional helicopter with the long-range, high-speed cruise performance of a turboprop aircraft. It first flew on March 18, 1989.

Boeing V-22 meets U.S. Navy requirements for combat search and rescue, fleet logistics support, and special warfare support and matches the U.S. Special Operations Command's requirement for a high-speed, long-range, vertical lift aircraft. It can be stored aboard an aircraft carrier because the rotors can fold and the wing rotate. The Osprey has air-to-air refueling capability, the cornerstone of the ability to self-deploy.
