VC 10, RAF History: The initial VC10 prototype, the "Type 1100", was rolled out from the Vickers plant at Brooklands, England, on 15 April 1962. Initial flight was on 29 June 1962, with company chief test pilot Jock Bryce at the controls, assisted by two other test pilots, Brian Trubshaw and Bill Cairns, and with three observers on board. Trials went very smoothly, with only a few minor changes required during the course of the tests. The Vickers VC10, a handful of these aircraft remain in service as aerial refueling and transport aircraft with the RAF. Although it was only a modest success commercially, the VC10 became an important inflight tanker asset for the British Royal Air Force (RAF).
