Vought SB2U Vindicator History:
When introduced into the fleet in late 1937, the Chance Vought SB2U "Vindicator" scout bomber was the Navy's first low wing monoplane that featured retractable landing gear, the space saving feature of folding wings, affording VB squadrons the higher performance of monoplanes without reducing numbers of aircraft aboard a carrier. Nevertheless, the SB2U possessed the inherent flaw of being the ultimate development of the trussed fuselage and fabric concept, which at the time of its introduction into the fleet was being superseded by all metal stressed skin construction techniques.
The Vought SB2U Vindicator is also known as the Chesapeake when it was in the service with the Royal Navy. It is a carrier-base dive bomber that was developed to be used by the United States Navy in 1930s. It is said to be the first monoplane having the said role. In 1943, all SB2U Vindicators were placed as training units.
The primary users of the Vindicators are the United States Navy, United States Marine Corps, French Marine Nationale, and Royal Navy. It served on four carriers for US Navy such as the USS Lexington, USS Saratoga, USS Ranger, and USS Wasp between 1937 and 1942.
The SB2U Vindicator is a low-wing tailwheel monoplane configuration. Its flight crews, the pilot and the tailgunner are seated in a long greenhouse-style canopy. Its feature design is its propeller which has a reversible pitch that allows the aircraft to use its brake during a dive bombing attack.
